A poem by Lizzy Brendel

Lizzy Brendel is a new author whose debut poetry collection details her life experience for the past decade. While pursuing a career in nursing, she often daydreamed of depicting her experiences in the written word. This fueled a full-blown poetry passion; giving life to the tumultuous, traumatic, and whimsical. So much so, in fact, that she pursued a minor in Creative Writing alongside her nursing degree at the University of Missouri-St. Louis. Her writing prowess, however, started much earlier. In her teenage years, she took two creative writing courses with Duke at Appalachian State University over two summers. She writes poems from her home in St. Louis, Missouri. She lives with her husband and their two cats and dog. You can find her hiking, embroidering, and reading in her free time. You can find her latest work on her Instagram, where she enjoys sharing her writing and engaging with other writers. Keep in touch with Lizzy on Instagram: @liz.the.poetess

Weather

I refuse to breath,

For fear of losing you,

To a rogue exhale.

I’ll keep you in my lungs,

Where my heart has paved,

A neighboring trail.

Because,

Babe,

You’re rare air.

I am not selfish,

But I certainly don’t want to share.

So,

For just a moment,

I’ll keep you in my care.

But don’t you fret,

In me,

There are oceans,

Ships,

And sails.

In you,

There are tempests,

Storms,

And gales.

These are such conditions,

It would seem,

For mutually-balanced scales.

We’re complementary.

Harmonious.

Nothing else compares.

I’ve got room for all your weather,

And you’ve got space for all my waves.

I can withstand all of your storms,

And we can dance with twists of fate.

If I exhale,

Will you leave?

Will you escape?

I suppose,

To find out,

There’s only,

One way.

But then,

You answered me,

Before my lungs could deflate,

With an inhale of your own,

And a promise to always stay.

You said that,

In you,

A home,

We could make.

And then you took my hand,

To dance,

With the strangest twist of fate.

You twirled me through sunshine,

Blizzards,

And torrential downpour rains.

I swayed you into oceans,

Rivers,

And mountainous alpine lakes.

And,

I suspect,

We will dance in these ways,

Together.

Hand-in-hand.

For the rest of our days.
