Holy Devotion
By Haig Moses
HOLY DEVOTION
You ask me
How you could be better,
But there is already tenderness
In the way you speak my name,
And weave your fingers
Through my hair.
You’ve shaken doubt
From my bones,
Like a battered mat made anew,
Leaving longing lovers
Hung askew.
It is spring,
And I never knew
The freedom of living
Without my midnight blues.
You ask me
How you could be softer,
But there is already hope
Sitting on our beside table—
Aching to relinquish its hold
On the night
And let the dawn return
To our eyes.
What else could I ask for,
Other than understanding?
What else could you need in me,
Other than a home?
The questions you pose,
Tied up in a rose,
Are enough to settle
The wanderlust in my bones.
I ask you
How I could love you more,
And you kiss me
Until I am sure.
